Storyline:
In a remote desert village in Kutch, Gujarat, a strict patriarchal code rules over the women’s lives. They are forbidden from stepping out of their homes without permission, let alone expressing themselves through joy or dance. These women are burdened by societal restrictions and the silence they are forced to live in. Their only escape is a daily water-fetching trip to a far-off well, where they walk together, but even there, their voices are muted.
Into this stifling world enters Manjhri, a newly married young woman with a free spirit and an independent voice. She joins the group of women and quickly begins to question the restrictions imposed on them. One day, while on their usual trip, the women stumble upon a man who has collapsed from exhaustion in the desert. He is a folk drummer, abandoned and wandering. The women help him and ask him to play his drum.
What follows is a transformative experience. For the first time, the women dance—uninhibited, joyful, powerful. This moment of liberation becomes a daily secret ritual, hidden from the eyes of the men who govern their lives. Through dance and rhythm, they find strength, identity, and resistance.
Hellaro unfolds as a journey of self-discovery and collective rebellion. It’s not a loud revolution, but one that builds quietly through unity and expression. Each woman in the group finds her own reason to break free—from grief, abuse, silence, or invisibility. The story is rich in symbolism and folklore, blending cultural beauty with raw social commentary.
